Beginning Journalism

This course is designed for students who either want to be a part of the Pawprint staff or have a genuine interest in Journalism.  Students will learn the basics of news, feature and sports writing as well as newspaper style, editing and design. This course will try to approximate newsroom-type assignments, so a large portion of the grade will be based on word processing and both in and out-of-class assignments. We will also study the First Amendment and its affect on newspaper and media in general.  The style of news writing will also benefit students in other academic courses.

Students will learn how a variety of factors affect the functions, behaviors, and changes in the human brain.  Students will conduct activities individually and in groups. Anatomy and/or Psychology are recommended prerequisites.

A study of political and current events in Latin  America today.

Diversity in Latin America

Some people believe that “Hispanics” or “Latinos” are all the same—but it just isn’t true! “Hispanics” come from many different backgrounds, and their cultures today vary greatly.  While they may all speak Spanish, each community is unique!

Historic Geology

This class will explore the environments of the past.  The class will examine the rock formations and fossils of the Colorado front range region. The environments of the past will be related to the evidence discovered in the examination of the rock formation and fossils.

History of American Film

Students will trace the development of American film and explore how this medium has influenced American society, history, and culture over the past century.  Students will learn about genre and the film maker’s use of frame and composition.  Class format will consist of film viewing while employing a variety of communication skills to analyze, discuss and review film content and its components.

History of Rock and Roll

Music has always been influential in the development of America.  Slaves’ sorrow songs, folk music, and jazz led to the creation of a new form of music that exploded in your parents’ lifetime, and continues to impact society today. This class will look at the development of rock and roll. Through early rhythm and blues, various British Invasions, the hippie movement, and today’s hip hop generation, music has changed the face—and history—of America, including the women’s and civil rights movements, antiwar protests, and today’s “Rock and Roll Presidents.”

Introduction to Yearbook

This interdisciplinary course provides the foundation for students who may want to apply for Yearbook staff in the future.  Students will learn the basics of photography, interviewing and story writing, marketing, and project planning.  Students will learn to use the In Design software to produce design and layout pages and will complete a final project to showcase their skills.

This course is designed to give students a better knowledge of legal principles involved in everyday living.  Topics will include Statutory Law, Case Law, types of crimes, enforcement, punishment, and the court systems.  Civil Law, torts, juvenile law, and individual rights and liberties will be explored.

Producing the Pawprint School Newspaper

As member of the Pawprint staff, you will have a shared responsibility of meeting deadlines to get a monthly newspaper written, laid out, proofed, edited, and printed. You will also sell advertising to cover the cost of publishing the paper.  Each issue will be planned by the group under the direction of the editor, assistant editor, and adviser.  You will learn the basics of inverted pyramid style news writing, news editing and the basics of page layout using In Design Software.  During the year you will produce a variety of stories, conduct interviews, submit photos or artwork, and write at least one major research story.  Creativity is encouraged!

Water Exploration

This class will explore the physical and chemical interactions of water with the environment.  This exploration will include lab, field studies, activities, discussion, research, and computer activities.  Fees: activities, lab materials, field trip transportation, entrance fees, equipment and materials.

Yearbook

Skills needed:  good work ethic, well developed writing skills, computer experience.  Each student will be directly involved with all aspects of producing a yearbook, including photography, journalism, design, marketing, and use of technology.  A variety of computer programs will be used.  Work outside class and advertising sales will be required of each staff member as part of the grade.  Students may take this class more than once.  Credit of .33 will be given at the end of each trimester.  Students need to apply for staff and editorial positions.
