Principles, concepts, and procedures, including journal entries for service and merchandising businesses – sole proprietorships and partnerships – posting to ledgers, preparing financial statements, and closing the books at the end of the fiscal period.  The complete accounting cycle will be covered through the use of business simulations and utilizing Excel software.  Strong math skills are helpful in this honors class.

Career Exploration

Have you thought about what you’d like to do “when you grow up?”  Have you thought about your interests, skills, and abilities, and how they might relate to jobs?  Are the high school classes that you are taking helping you move toward a career?  The Career Exploration class can help you answer these and other questions that will become more important as you get closer to high school graduation.  Class activities include interest and skills assessments, computer assisted assessments, and career research.  Guest speakers from a variety of career paths will visit the class and share their experiences.  This class can be very helpful for those who are uncertain about what career path they might follow or who want to gain more insight into themselves as employees.

In this course students will learn to input video and audio signals to a digital hard drive. They will learn to split, trim, and label video scenes and select and place those scenes in a storyboard. They will learn to assemble and arrange and rearrange scenes to create a meaningful video production. They will learn how to create transitions between visual segments. Fees will be used for DVD mini and VHS videotape.

Cash and Consumer

Money is a necessary resource in our society.  It is a resource most people like and never seem to have enough of.  Statistically, teenagers spend more money on their personal needs and wants than any other age group.  In contrast, bankruptcies in Colorado are at a high level. This course is designed to help high school students learn about wise use of money, budgeting and savings tips, banking services, proper use of credit, and using money in day-to-day situations.  Practical application of knowledge through projects and simulations will give students an opportunity to practice the skills discussed in class.

Catering

Through classroom instruction and real catering experiences, students in this course will learn various aspects of starting and owning a small catering business.  Students will explore career opportunities while learning quantity food preparation and entrepreneurship.  Areas of focus include food production and service industry, safety and sanitation, equipment and tools, food preparation, and entrepreneurship and business plans.

Classroom Aide

Students will pick up a packet outside ECU containing room and/or teacher assignments, course syllabus, course requirements and a training work assignment.  Failure to turn in required paperwork will result in loss of points towards the final grade or total number of hours. A student may choose to use Classroom Aiding as a way to acquire Community Service hours. Each trimester in Classroom Aiding usually results in around 35 hours of Community Service.  A student may sign up for additional Classroom Aiding classes as a way to complete the 50-hour requirements.  (A student who signs up for Classroom Aiding twice would acquire about 70 hours of Community Service for .33 credit.  A student who signs up for Classroom Aiding three times would acquire 105 hours for .66 credit.  Students have the option to count this course as community service or internship credit, with approval of the advisor) or take the class for a letter grade.  Students taking this class for a grade will be subject to eligibility rules for athletics and other activities.  Students who take the course as community service or internship credit cannot count the class as one of the 5 required for academic eligibility. Attendance is mandatory. Three unexcused absences or tardies will cause the student to be withdrawn from the class.

This beginning class introduces computer applications such as word processing (WORD), spreadsheets (EXCEL), presentation software (POWERPOINT), and databases (ACCESS). While learning the basics of these applications, students will practice keyboarding skill development. Students are required to have a USB storage device.

Effective design and use of Microsoft Access databases will be emphasized.  Students will use filters, sorts, and queries to generate a variety of reports, tables, and forms, and share data with other applications.  Sub forms, on-line applications, and data access pages will also be covered as time permits.  A final project will bring all the applications together to show how databases are used in a business.

Excel/Power Point

Excel is an electronic spreadsheet that performs numeric calculations rapidly and accurately.  Students will learn to plan and build worksheets, enter data, use formulas for data analysis, convert information into chart form, plan, design, create, edit and enhance charts, learn advanced formatting and summarizing of data with Pivot Tables and Pivot Charts.  Students will also practice the development of professional presentations using Power Point presentation software.

Nutrition and Wellness

Eating is necessary to maintain physical health, but food also meets social, cultural, and emotional needs.  However, poor nutrition and being overweight are two conditions resulting in serious health issues for Americans of all ages. The purpose of this course is to develop lifelong healthy individuals who understand the principles of nutrition, the relationship of exercise and fitness to overall wellness, and digestion and metabolism.  Students will also learn basic food preparation skills through a food lab experience.  A physical activity component is now part of this course.

Graduation from high school is an important and exciting event.  But what happens after the parties are over and the cap and gown are put away?  This course is designed to help students make the transition from high school to life after high school.  Units of study will include personal values and goals, job vs. career, personal interest and aptitude assessment, career choices, job seeking skills, work ethic, work relationships and communication, conflict resolution, and balancing work and family.  One shadowing experience will part of the course.

Parenting & Child Psychology

Parenting! How does it fit into your life plans? How can children impact your life? Are you considering a career that involves working with children? This course is designed to help answer those questions.  The curriculum includes units on the decision to parent, pregnancy and parental care, childbirth, postnatal care of mother and baby, and neonatal (new baby) care.  Students will get “first-hand” experience caring for a baby by parenting an infant simulator baby for 2 to 3 days.

Teacher Cadet--Honors

This course is designed to provide students with an in-depth look at the profession of teaching.
