Have you thought about what you’d like to do “when you grow up?” Have you thought about your interests, skills, and abilities, and how they might relate to jobs? Are the high school classes that you are taking helping you move toward a career? The Career Exploration class can help you answer these and other questions that will become more important as you get closer to high school graduation. Class activities include interest and skills assessments, computer assisted assessments, and career research. Guest speakers from a variety of career paths will visit the class and share their experiences. This class can be very helpful for those who are uncertain about what career path they might follow or who want to gain more insight into themselves as employees.

In this course students will learn to input video and audio signals to a digital hard drive. They will learn to split, trim, and label video scenes and select and place those scenes in a storyboard. They will learn to assemble and arrange and rearrange scenes to create a meaningful video production. They will learn how to create transitions between visual segments. Fees will be used for DVD mini and VHS videotape.

Money is a necessary resource in our society. It is a resource most people like and never seem to have enough of. Statistically, teenagers spend more money on their personal needs and wants than any other age group. In contrast, bankruptcies in Colorado are at a high level. This course is designed to help high school students learn about wise use of money, budgeting and savings tips, banking services, proper use of credit, and using money in day-to-day situations. Practical application of knowledge through projects and simulations will give students an opportunity to practice the skills discussed in class.

Through classroom instruction and real catering experiences, students in this course will learn various aspects of starting and owning a small catering business. Students will explore career opportunities while learning quantity food preparation and entrepreneurship. Areas of focus include food production and service industry, safety and sanitation, equipment and tools, food preparation, and entrepreneurship and business plans.

Classroom Aide
Students will pick up a packet outside ECU door containing teacher and/or room assignments, course syllabus, course requirements and a training work assignment. Failure to turn in required paperwork will result in loss of points towards the final grade or total number of hours. A 600 word essay is due at the end of the trimester. This essay, classroom evaluation and paperwork return will be counted toward the final grade or community service hours. A student may choose to use Classroom Aiding as a way to acquire Community Service hours. Each trimester in Classroom Aiding usually results in around 35 hours of Community Service. A student may sign up for additional Classroom Aiding classes as a way to complete the 50-hour requirements. (A student who signs up for Classroom Aiding twice would acquire about 70 hours of Community Service for .33 credit. A student who signs up for Classroom Aiding three times would acquire 105 hours for .66 credit. Students have the option to count this course as community service or internship credit, with approval of the advisor) or take the class for a letter grade. Students taking this class for a grade will be subject to eligibility rules for athletics and other activities. Students who take the course as community service or internship credit cannot count the class as one of the 5 required for academic eligibility. Attendance is mandatory. Three unexcused absences or tardies will cause the student to be withdrawn from the class.

This beginning class introduces computer applications such as word processing (WORD), spreadsheets (EXCEL), presentation software (POWERPOINT), and databases (ACCESS). While learning the basics of these applications, students will practice keyboarding skill development.

Effective design and use of Microsoft Access databases will be emphasized. Students will use filters, sorts, and queries to generate a variety of reports, tables, and forms, and share data with other applications. This basic economics course is designed to acquaint students with the market economy, everyday business activities in our society, and the responsibilities of each citizen. Education Exploration
Education Exploration is a 2-trimester course designed to provide students with an overview of professions within education. Students will discover their own learning style and how learning styles impact teaching and the delivery of lessons. Experiences with various education professionals will enhance the understanding of classroom planning, licensure requirements, and career opportunities within school systems. This course includes a minimum of 15 extended learning hours, which may be outside of class time. With exemplary performance and instructor recommendation, students may apply for the Teacher Cadet program without meeting the 3.0 GPA requirement.

English Language Acquisition (ELA) Peer Tutors
This class is for students who speak another language as well as English. If you have been an English Language Learner and have reached proficiency, we want you to be a Peer Tutor. Peer Tutors work with elementary students who are English Language Learners. During this class the tutor will assist the younger student in his/her class. Peer tutors will attend required weekly meetings during their lunch hour. In these meetings students will be guided on strategies that help support English Language Learners. We are specifically looking for high school students who can use their own background knowledge and experiences of being a second language learner. This class can be taken more than once and students have the option to count this course as a grade, community service, or an internship. Students taking this course for a grade will be subject to eligibility rules for athletics and other activities. Students who take the course as community service or internship credit cannot count the class as one of the 5 required for academic eligibility.

Students will become familiar with the process of owning their own business as they select products or services to sell, determine who their customers will be, learn how to market their business, obtain financing, manage their employees, and put together a business plan. Excel is an electronic spreadsheet that performs numeric calculations rapidly and accurately. Students will learn to plan and build worksheets, enter data, use formulas for data analysis, convert information into chart form, plan, design, create, edit and enhance charts, learn advanced formatting and summarizing of data with Pivot Tables and Pivot Charts. Students will also practice the development of professional presentations using Power Point presentation software.

Money, food, family, friends, independence, and the future are of interest and importance to many high school students. This course will address these issues, with a focus on developing the skills needed to be successful and independent. Field trips, guest speakers, group discussions, media, reading, and writing are important components of this class.

Nutrition and Wellness
Eating is necessary to maintain physical health, but food also meets social, cultural, and emotional needs. However, poor nutrition and being overweight are two conditions resulting in serious health issues for Americans of all ages. The purpose of this course is to develop lifelong healthy individuals who understand the principles of nutrition, the relationship of exercise and fitness to overall wellness, and digestion and metabolism. Students will also learn basic food preparation skills through a food lab experience. A physical activity component is now part of this course.

Parenting! How does it fit into your life plans? How can children impact your life? Are you considering a career that involves working with children? This course is designed to help answer those questions. The curriculum includes units on the decision to parent, pregnancy and parental care, childbirth, postnatal care of mother and baby, and neonatal (new baby) care. Students will get “first-hand” experience caring for a baby by parenting an infant simulator baby for 2 to 3 days.

Children- are they fascinating little people or endless sources of work and worry? If you like children, plan to someday work with children, or hope to be a parent, this course is for you! The primary focus of this course will be the development of skills needed by people who work with children – either as parent or within a career. Topics include meeting the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs of children from birth to age 12; health and safety issues; the value of play; communicating effectively with children; and developing activities for children. Guest speakers, preschool observations, and interactions with children are important components of this class.

The relationships a person develops with family members and friends are important and enrich the person’s life. Good relationships are not automatic—they take time and skills to develop. This course focuses on the skills needed to develop a variety of meaningful and successful relationships. Units of study include personal values and goals, personal interactions, communication skills, friendship development, dating issues, marriage preparation (readiness, mate selection, engagement, etc.), wedding planning, and qualities of successful relationships.

This course is designed to provide students with an in-depth look at the profession of teaching. Students study the growth and development of the learner, as well as the historical, social, political, philosophical, cultural, legal, and economic forces that shape the United States public school system. In addition, students complete a 50-hour field experience in a school classroom. The Teacher Cadet curriculum has been aligned with the current college level Introduction to Education course for teachers. The Application is available in Student Services and is due January 18.

Web Page Design
The emphasis of this course is creative design of web sites. Using Adobe CS4 programs, including DreamWeaver web development software, Fireworks graphics editor and Flash dynamic applications, students will manage web site files and develop sites for themselves and/or others.
