npAcademic Literacy and Composition
This reading and writing course is designed to help raise the competency level in reading and writing of incoming freshmen who are on an Individual Literacy Plan (ILP) or who scored at the unsatisfactory level on CSAP in 7th grade or who are recommended by their 8th grade literacy teachers. A variety of sources (art, literature, film and music) and multiple teaching/learning strategies will be employed to guide students to become more motivated and to become more personally engaged with their own skill development in literacy. Students may only take Academic Literacy and Composition on a referral basis, through their current English teacher, special educator, or counselor. Elective credit will be awarded for this class. Exceptions may be made for students on an individualized education plan.

This is a study of literature which leads to possible university-level English credit by taking the College Board exam at the end of the year. Students will read a wide range of literature: poetry, prose and drama by both American and World authors in translation. Emphasis will focus on students' abilities to think creatively and analytically as they discuss literature and write numerous analytical/expository essays both in class and outside of class time. Recommended grade level is seniors (with approval - some juniors). Credit of .33 given at the end of each trimester. Exam fee is approximately $97. FEES: Must purchase own books.

The Advanced Placement English Language and Composition course is designed by College Board to help students develop critical thinking and writing skills based on the study of grammar, syntax, linguistics and specific readings of non-fiction texts. Students will study language and grammar, read extensively, and write non-fiction and expository essays in order to clarify and enhance their critical thinking skills. A College Board sponsored exam administered in May, is an option for receiving university credit for this course. Exam fee is approximately $97. FEES: Students will be expected to buy a reading text and grammar text.

Advanced Word Power: Vocabulary
This course is designed to help students prepare for college entrance exams and to develop a vocabulary appropriate for the university level. The content of this class will focus on developing and expanding students’ existing vocabularies with a specific focus on ACT and SAT vocabulary. Students will read to identify language in context, study root words, prefixes, and suffixes, and write to use sophisticated vocabulary for appropriate uses. The fee is for the purchase of a workbook. This course is for students who already have a strong basis in vocabulary as determined by assessment scores (see prerequisites). Students who do not have these scores should sign up for the regular Word Power course.

*African American Literature
This course is a student-centered study of a variety of African American cultures through literature (oral tradition, the novel, poetry, and non-fiction), art, music, film and popular culture through thematic units.

Students will explore their own backgrounds and personal stories. Students will read an autobiography for discussion and study of autobiographical writing techniques. Students will write short chapters on their life experiences and integrate them into an autobiography-in-progress.

This course will strengthen literacy skills through the study of contemporary world and American literature and discussion as well as extensive expository writing, literary analysis, creative writing and vocabulary building. This emphasis will develop and hone necessary literacy and writing skills to prepare students for college and career success. The literature studied will be the novel, poetry, drama and short and non-fiction.

*Contemporary Voices: Sophomore English Honors
The purpose of Honors Studies in English is to offer motivated, capable, and interested students an opportunity to enrich their academic experience. This honors course is a more rigorous, in-depth approach to strengthening literacy skills and discussion as well as extensive expository writing, literary analysis, creative writing and vocabulary building. This emphasis will develop and hone literacy and writing skills to prepare students for college and beyond. The world and American literature studied will be the novel, poetry, drama and short and non-fiction.

*Creative Writing
Students will learn to utilize the tools and techniques of creative writing to produce short stories, poetry, and dramas. Students will engage in daily in-class writing as well as produce formal pieces. Students will also read and discuss a variety of published pieces.

Students will study and practice the craft of expository writing with a foundation in research and MLA format. Elements of expository writing include essays of comparison and contrast, division/classification and process analysis. Students will read a variety of sample texts to study form and style. They will craft their own essays through the writing process, including pre-writing, drafting and peer conferences.

*Forensics I
This course is designed to support students in their first years of competitive speaking. It will focus on the elements of debate as well as the principles of public speaking as they apply to interpretation and performance. Students will earn grades as a result of interscholastic competition and the National Forensics League (NFL) point system. To compete in 18 rounds of Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) sanctioned speech events, students must submit a parent approval form. Students will be required to conform to University High School (UHS) Activity Fee requirements.

This course is designed to support students as they mature in competitive speaking. It will expand upon the elements of debate and refine the critical thinking skills of analysis and argument as well as continue to polish interpretation and performance skills. Students will be expected to teach Forensics I students about forensic competition. Students will earn grades based on interscholastic competition and the NFL point system. To compete in 18 rounds of Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) sanctioned speech events, students must submit a parent approval form. Students will be required to conform to University High School (UHS) Activity Fee requirements.

The purpose of Honors Studies in English is to offer motivated, capable, and interested students an opportunity to enrich their academic experience. To enhance further develop the students’ skills in the communication process, the following aspects of language arts will be emphasized: critical reading, literacy terminology and analysis, writing process, grammar and syntax, informative and persuasive speaking and group discussion.

npGender Roles in American Literature
This course is a student-centered study of male and female roles in America through a variety of literature (the novel, poetry, drama and non-fiction), art, music, film and popular culture through thematic units, such as gender socialization, adolescence, relationships and romance, violence, beauty and appearance and other cultural norms concerning gender roles and expectations.

*Introduction to British Literature
Students will be introduced to some of the masterpieces of British literature. Students will read, discuss and write critically about literature from Britain, including short stories, novels, poetry, and drama. We will explore themes and ideas that are important to the development of British literature in order to gain an appreciation for our own literary history and backgrounds.

*Latino-American Literature
This literature course will focus on texts written by Latino-American authors. This student-centered course will use a variety of materials including art, music, film, fiction and non-fiction texts that will address themes related to the culture and contributions made by the Latino-American community. Students will be expected to read analytically, to think critically, and to write responsively about the literature.

*Literature of Protest
This course will examine the concept of protest and the literature typically produced by protest movements. We will attempt to define what is meant by protest. We will begin with a look at the pamphleteering of Thomas Paine and consider other historical, maybe even hysterical, protest movements. We will consider, as well, the literature that is generated as a result of cultural evolution.

*Shakespeare – The Comedy Plays
In this course, students will explore Shakespeare’s use of comedic elements to reveal the flaws and foibles of humanity. We will look at the ways in which the Bard used cross gender and cross-dressing experiences to create comedic tensions and situations in which the battle of the sexes is played out.

*Shakespeare – The Tragedies
In this course, students will read the plays aloud in class in order to understand and gain confidence in the use of the language of the Elizabethan era. We will read two of the tragedies in addition to Hamlet and reflect on the ways in which Shakespeare explores the human condition.

This course is for students who need to build their vocabulary in order to improve scores in their classes, their writing, and on standardized tests (see prerequisites). Students who already have a strong vocabulary should enroll in the Advanced Word Power class.

npWriting Center
This course is an advanced writing class that trains students to staff and manage the University Writing Center. Students will be trained as Writing Consultants and, after their training is complete, will work individually with other student writers to assist them in improving their writing abilities. Writing Consultants will be responsible for staffing the Writing Center during lunch and after schoo0l. In order to compensate Writing Consultants for their time, Consultants may be paid at an hourly rate. More importantly, Writing Consultants will receive intensive individual instruction regarding the craft of writing and will develop individual identities as writers. In order to register fr this course, students must complete and submit an application.
