Advanced Ceramics

Students will have the opportunity to further develop their skills on independent clay assignments of their choice. Self expression, craftsmanship and creativity will be emphasized. Students will be expected to challenge their abilities and techniques: the sky will be the limit. Can be taken multiple times.

Advanced Drawing & Painting

This class is designed for students interested in developing themselves as artists.  Students will focus on composition through the study of Postmodern Art Principles and exposure to contemporary artists, with an emphasis on personal style and self-expression. Projects will include large acrylic and oil painting, watercolor, mixed media, pen, paste and practice keeping a sketchbookl. This year-long class will incorporate both assigned and independent work, and can be taken multiple times.

Advanced Placement Studio Art: 2D Design, Drawing, or 3D Design

This course is designed for students interested in investigating three aspects of an Art 2D, Drawing, or 3D portfolio: Quality,  Concentration, and Breadth.  In this class students will also study contemporary artists and trends by visiting art museums and galleries in person and on-line.  Students will focus on the four Cs:  Compelling, Capable, Confident, and Complete.  Students may choose to submit their art portfolio for possible college credit.

Advanced Theatre Arts

Students will expand their drama skills by exploring a variety of acting styles, dramatic literature, musical theatre concepts and literature, characterization, monologue and scene development, stage directing, stage movement and technical theatre.  Students will create a portfolio of material to be used for high school, college or community auditions.  Students will have the opportunity to develop their own scripts, direct and stage one-act plays, and work on their own theatre related projects.

Art of Comics

This class will explore the art of sequential storytelling using words and images, also known as-comics.  Students will be able to create an original comic book that will be ready for printing.  This class is suited for both visual artists and creative writers.

Art of Comics II

Continue the Adventure!  This class will go deeper into the techniques and methods used in the art of sequential storytelling using words and images.  Students will create an original comic and explore new concepts dealing with the art of comics.

Ceramics I

This course is designed to introduce students to the clay medium and process.  Students will explore different techniques for hand building, wheel throwing, glazing and firing.  Students will utilize the elements and principles of design and apply these to three dimensional work.

Ceramics II

This course is designed for further exploration in the ceramics medium.  More technically advanced wheel thrown and hand building assignments will be given including an emphasis on problem solving. Students will be encouraged to express themselves through their art work.

Choraliers

This choir is for all students interested in joining and serious about singing. Students will develop good vocal technique through vocal exercises, and sight singing. We will be singing the best in standard choral literature and popular tunes. The choir will perform concerts in the school and out in the community.

Concert Band

Band class will provide an opportunity for students to develop their musical skills in a high-quality ensemble.  We will perform pieces from standard band literature in the areas of classical, contemporary, and popular music.  The band members will also be a part of Pep Band which will play for football and basketball games.

Creative Drama

If you are one of the special students who would like to learn about the theatrical experience through drama, stage movement, play evaluation, scene analysis, technical and musical theatre, we are looking for YOU! Creative drama will help you develop various ways in which to communicate vocally and physically in order to perform for an audience. This will include stage fundamentals, pantomime, improvisation, characterization, and scene work.

Drawing and Painting I

This class is designed for students who want to learn how to draw and paint. Emphasis will be placed on understanding fundamental skills, the Elements of Art and the practice of keeping a sketchbook, while encouraging students to develop a personal style of self-expression.  We will learn essential techniques using traditional media (graphite pencils and acrylic paint).  Students will also be exposed to art history from prehistory up through the Medieval period.

Drawing and Painting II

This class is designed for students who want to grow and improve their drawing and painting skills. Students will build on skills learned in Drawing & Painting I. Emphasis will be placed on composition and The Principles of Design, and the practice of keeping a sketchbook.  We will use different drawing and painting medias, such as watercolor, pastel and colored pencils. Students will also be exposed to art history from the Renaissance up through contemporary art movements. This course is designed for students planning to continue into upper level art courses.

Introduction to Art

This class serves as the first course in the Visual Arts program. Emphasis will be placed on the Elements of Art and artist craftsmanship.  Students will complete projects relating to the other art courses offered at University. A wide variety of materials will be used to create both two-dimensional and three-dimensional works of art.

Jazz Band

The students in Jazz Band will learn how to play music through the jazz idiom using the best of standard jazz music literature.  They will develop their ensemble skills and learn the fundamentals of jazz improvisation solo techniques.  This class may meet during a zero-hour block (45 minutes before school) on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Printmaking, Collage, and Book Arts

This class explores techniques in printmaking, collage and book making.  Printmaking projects will include carved prints, monotypes, and stencils.  Collage and book making will include, mixed media collage, paper cutouts, and book binding. Students will practice keeping a sketchbook. This class requires that students gather found objects outside of class to use for some projects.
